Zheng Qinwen Jokes About Novak Djokovic Bringing His Olympic Gold to the 2024 US Open
Zheng Qinwen and Novak Djokovic, fresh off their Olympic gold medal victories in Paris, have turned their focus to the 2024 US Open. Zheng, who made history as the first Chinese tennis player to win an Olympic gold, began her campaign at Flushing Meadows with a gritty three-set victory over American Amanda Anisimova, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
During her post-match on-court interview, Zheng was asked about her Olympic gold medal. She humorously admitted that she didn’t bring it with her to New York but couldn’t resist making a playful comment about her fellow Olympic champion. “I don’t have my gold medal with me,” Zheng said with a smile, “but I know Djokovic has his medal with him.” Her lighthearted remark drew laughs and highlighted the camaraderie between the two tennis stars.
Despite her Olympic triumph, Zheng emphasized that she’s not dwelling on past achievements. She made it clear that her focus is on the present, particularly on performing well at the US Open. “I’m happy about what I did in the past, but I just want to focus here,” she stated. Zheng added that she approaches each tournament with a fresh mindset, starting from zero regardless of her previous success.
Next up for Zheng is a second-round match against Russian teenager Erika Andreeva, where she’ll aim to build on her strong start. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, a four-time US Open champion, is also set to begin his campaign. Both players are looking to continue their winning momentum from the Olympics and leave their mark on the final Grand Slam of the year.
