Florida State University (FSU) quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has added another accolade to his stellar season, clinching the prestigious Maxwell Award for excellence in college football. The announcement was made on Thursday night during the 2024 College Football Awards ceremony in Atlanta, solidifying Uiagalelei’s status as one of the top players in the nation.
The Maxwell Award, given annually since 1937, recognizes the player who best exemplifies outstanding performance, leadership, and contribution to the game. Uiagalelei, a pivotal force behind FSU’s remarkable season, becomes the first Seminole to win the award since Jameis Winston in 2013.
“I’m incredibly honored to receive this award,” Uiagalelei said during his acceptance speech. “It’s a testament to the hard work of my teammates, coaches, and everyone who supports me. This season has been unforgettable, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Florida State on this stage.”
Uiagalelei’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Transferring to FSU this season, he quickly adapted to Mike Norvell’s system, leading the Seminoles to a 12-1 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff. Known for his powerful arm, poise under pressure, and ability to inspire his team, Uiagalelei has thrown for over 3,800 yards and 35 touchdowns while rushing for another seven scores.
FSU head coach Mike Norvell praised Uiagalelei’s impact on and off the field. “DJ is a leader, a competitor, and an incredible representative of our program. This award is well-deserved, and we couldn’t be prouder.”
With the Maxwell Award in hand, Uiagalelei now shifts focus to the playoffs, where the Seminoles aim to bring home their first national championshipsince 2013.
