Coach Mario Cristobal Defends QB Cam Ward Amid Criticism

Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal has come to the defense of quarterback Cam Ward following criticism over his performance in the team’s Pop-Tarts Bowl loss. The Hurricanes fell 28-24 in a tightly contested game, with Ward facing scrutiny for an early exit due to an apparent injury.

Ward, who transferred to Miami this season, had been instrumental in leading the team to bowl eligibility, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns during the season. However, his decision to leave the game in the third quarter sparked controversy, with some questioning his toughness and commitment.

Cristobal addressed the issue in a press conference, firmly supporting his quarterback and dispelling any negative narratives. “The criticism Cam has received is completely unwarranted,” Cristobal said. “He’s played through injuries all season and has given everything to this program. The decision to pull him was a medical one, and it was the right call for his health and future.”

The head coach also highlighted Ward’s contributions to the team, calling him a leader and a competitor who has earned the respect of his teammates. “Cam has been a warrior for us all year,” Cristobal added. “He’s the kind of player you want leading your program—talented, dedicated, and unselfish.”

Ward himself took to social media to thank fans for their support and reaffirm his commitment to the Hurricanes. “Tough loss, but I’m proud of what we accomplished this season,” he wrote. “I’m not done yet—bigger things ahead for this team.”

As Miami looks to rebound next season, Cristobal’s defense of Ward sends a clear message: the Hurricanes stand united behind their quarterback, who remains a key piece of their future.
