One of Ohio State’s top signal-caller targets for the 2026 class has reopened his recruitment.
our-star California quarterback Brady Smigiel decommitted from Florida State on Sunday, breaking off a commitment that had stood since June. The decommitment seems significant given that Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly just visited Smigiel on Saturday.
Per 247Sports’ composite rankings, Smigiel is considered the No. 62 prospect and No. 5 quarterback in the 2026 class. He completed 219 of 336 passes for 3,521 yards and threw for 49 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions this past season. He also ran for 435 yards on 89 carries with 11 rushing touchdowns.
BUCKEYE COACHES HIT THE RECRUITING TRAIL
With the national championship celebration concluded on Sunday, Ohio State coaches got back on the road Monday to hit the recruiting trail.
In what was probably a no-brainer move, secondary coach Tim Walton visited in-state five-star cornerback Elbert Hill. Hill has drawn plenty of interest nationally and is at the top of OSU’s wishlist with cornerbacks this cycle.
The decommitment isn’t purely OSU-related, though, as Florida State just changed its offensive scheme by hiring Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator and the Seminoles may not be as good an on-field fit for Smigiel anymore. Ohio State is expected to be in the running for Smigiel going forward, along with Michigan, UCLA, Washington, Michigan State and South Carolina. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound product will likely take visits to at least a handful of those schools this spring.
Four-star in-state prospect Adam Guthrie has become a major priority for the Buckeyes at offensive tackle. Guthrie was at OSU’s championship celebration on Sunday, and offensive line coach Justin Frye made it a priority to stop at Guthrie’s school on Monday.
