Arkansas Razorbacks offensive lineman Fernando Carmona has spoken out after facing backlash for an incident during the Liberty Bowl that many called a “dirty” play. The controversy arose when Carmona appeared to step on the ankle of Texas Tech safety CJ Baskerville during the fourth quarter of Arkansas’ 39-26 victory on December 28.
Video footage of the incident quickly circulated on social media, with many fans and analysts accusing Carmona of unsportsmanlike conduct. The play occurred as Baskerville lay on the ground following a tackle, and Carmona’s foot made contact with his ankle. While some defended the action as unintentional, others believed it was a deliberate act.
On Monday, Carmona took to social media to address the controversy. In a statement, he apologized to Baskerville and the Arkansas fanbase, emphasizing that there was no malicious intent behind his actions.
“I want to sincerely apologize to CJ Baskerville and the Texas Tech team,” Carmona wrote. “It was never my intention to hurt anyone. I play the game with passion, and in the heat of the moment, things can sometimes look worse than they are. I respect my opponents and the game of football.”
Despite his apology, reactions remain divided. Some Razorbacks fans have defended Carmona, arguing that football is a physical game and moments like these happen. Others believe he should face disciplinary action, including a possible suspension.
Texas Tech has not yet commented on the incident, and Baskerville himself has remained silent on the matter. Meanwhile, the NCAA and SEC officials have not announced any further review or potential punishment for Carmona.
The Razorbacks’ coaching staff has also yet to issue an official statement regarding the play. With the season now over, it remains to be seen whether the controversy will have any lasting impact on Carmona’s collegiate career.
