In a surprising development that has sent ripples through the college football community, five-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III has committed to the University of Florida, choosing the Gators over Ohio State, Miami, and Florida State. This decision, announced on July 21, 2024, marks a significant milestone for Florida’s recruiting efforts.
Brown, hailing from Orlando’s Jones High School, is ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect and the sixth-best wide receiver in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 170 pounds, his agility and playmaking abilities have made him a coveted asset among top-tier college programs.
Ohio State emerged as a strong contender following Brown’s official visit during the first weekend of June. He expressed admiration for the Buckeyes, stating, “I really loved everything about it… OSU has done a great job showing me and my family why they are the program they are and show the way they do things. It’s a really good program and it really opened my eyes on this (official visit).”
However, familial ties to the University of Florida played a pivotal role in Brown’s decision. His father, Vernell Brown Jr., was a cornerback for the Gators from 2001-2005 and later served as the senior director of student-athlete development and alumni relations from 2018-2023. Additionally, his grandfather, Vernell Brown Sr., also played for the Gators, solidifying a deep-rooted family legacy at the institution.
Brown’s commitment is a significant boost for Florida’s 2025 recruiting class, making him the first five-star prospect to join the Gators for that cycle. This addition elevates the program’s standing and showcases head coach Billy Napier’s dedication to attracting elite talent.
For Ohio State, Brown’s decision necessitates a shift in recruiting strategy. The Buckeyes have already secured commitments from four-star wide receivers Quincy Porter and De’Zie Jones, as well as three-star prospect Bodpegn Miller. They are now expected to intensify efforts to land other top targets, such as California’s four-star receiver Phillip Bell, who is anticipated to choose between Ohio State and USC later this summer.
Brown’s choice underscores the complex dynamics of college football recruiting, where personal affiliations, program prestige, and individual aspirations intersect. As he embarks on his collegiate career with the Gators, fans and analysts alike will be keen to witness the impact of this highly touted receiver on Florida’s quest for national prominence.
