In a significant development for Indiana University basketball, Head Coach Mike Woodson has announced he will step down at the conclusion of the current season. Woodson, who has led the Hoosiers since 2021, shared his decision with Athletic Director Scott Dolson earlier this week, citing that it was an emotional and difficult choice.

Woodson’s tenure at Indiana began with promise, leading the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances in his first two seasons. However, the past two years have been challenging, with the Hoosiers missing the tournament last season and currently holding a 14-9 record, including a recent four-game losing streak.

In response to Woodson’s impending departure, Indiana University has moved swiftly to secure a successor. Darian DeVries, formerly the head coach at West Virginia, has been appointed as the new head coach for the Hoosiers. DeVries, 49, led West Virginia to a 19-13 record in his sole season, achieving notable victories over top-ranked teams such as Gonzaga, Kansas, and Iowa State. Prior to his stint at West Virginia, DeVries had a successful six-year tenure at Drake University, where he amassed a 169-68 record and led the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

DeVries expressed enthusiasm about joining Indiana, stating, “This is a dream come true. Indiana basketball has a rich history, and I am honored to be a part of it.” Athletic Director Scott Dolson praised DeVries for his proven ability to build a championship culture and his extensive experience, including 15 NCAA Tournament appearances as a head coach or assistant.

The transition has not been without controversy. Some fans have speculated about the timing of DeVries’ hiring, suggesting that discussions may have occurred while he was still at West Virginia. Additionally, the potential transfer of DeVries’ son, Tucker, who was sidelined due to a shoulder injury this season, has fueled further speculation among fans.

As Indiana looks to the future under new leadership, the focus will be on returning to the upper echelons of college basketball. DeVries’ track record of success and his commitment to building a competitive team offer hope to Hoosier fans eager to see their team regain prominence on the national stage.
