Indiana University has officially named Darian DeVries as the 31st head coach of the men’s basketball program following the departure of Mike Woodson. The hiring marks a new era for the Hoosiers, as DeVries brings a strong coaching background and a track record of success.
DeVries, 48, spent the past six seasons as the head coach at Drake University, where he revitalized the program, leading the Bulldogs to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. Before that, he spent two decades as an assistant at Creighton, gaining a reputation for his player development skills and offensive strategies.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach DeVries to the Hoosier family,” said Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson. “His commitment to excellence, ability to develop talent, and success in postseason play make him the right choice to lead Indiana basketball into the future.”
DeVries takes over a storied Indiana program that has struggled to regain its former dominance. Under Woodson, the Hoosiers saw mixed results, including an NCAA Tournament appearance but also inconsistencies in Big Ten play. Fans and alumni hope that DeVries’ leadership can return Indiana to national prominence.
“I am honored and excited to be the head coach at Indiana,” DeVries said in a statement. “The tradition and passion surrounding this program are unmatched, and I can’t wait to get to work with our players and staff to build something special.”
With roster decisions and the transfer portal in full swing, DeVries faces immediate challenges in shaping the team for next season. His ability to recruit and implement his system quickly will be crucial as Indiana looks to compete at the highest level in the Big Ten and beyond.
