Michael Norvell Faces Major Setback as Injury Crisis and Coaching Inexperience Threaten FSU’s Spring Progress

Florida  State head coach Mike Norvell is facing a challenging spring as injuries and an inexperienced coaching staff threaten the Seminoles’ progress ahead of the 2025 season. After a strong 2024 campaign, FSU entered spring practice with high expectations, but multiple setbacks have disrupted their momentum.

The most pressing issue is a growing injury list that has sidelined key players on both sides of the ball. Star running back Trey Benson and veteran offensive lineman Robert Scott Jr. are among those dealing with nagging injuries, limiting their participation in key drills. Additionally, the defensive unit has suffered significant blows, with young talents like linebacker Blake Nichelson and defensive back Conrad Hussey missing valuable reps.

Compounding the problem is the inexperience within Norvell’s revamped coaching staff. After the departure of key assistants, Norvell brought in several new faces, including a first-time play-caller on offense. The adjustment period has been bumpy, with reports indicating struggles in play execution and communication during practices.

These challenges come at a critical time for Florida State, as the program looks to build on last season’s ACC dominance and position itself for a College Football Playoff push. With the departure of quarterback Jordan Travis, the battle for the starting QB role remains unsettled, adding another layer of uncertainty.

Norvell remains optimistic, emphasizing that adversity is part of the game. “We’re going to keep pushing forward and getting better every day,” he said. However, with the season approaching, FSU will need to overcome these hurdles quickly to maintain its competitive edge.

As spring camp progresses, all eyes will be on how Norvell and his staff handle the growing challenges—and whether Florida State can emerge stronger from this period of uncertainty.
