Former Utah Utes defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa is making headlines after opening up about his decision to transfer to rival BYU, shedding light on motivations that go far beyond football.

Tanuvasa, a standout lineman originally from Hawaii, surprised fans earlier this year when he announced his move to BYU after two seasons with Utah. In a recent interview, the 6’3″, 290-pound defensive force addressed the backlash he received from some Utah supporters and offered a heartfelt explanation behind his controversial choice.

“This decision wasn’t about playing time, NIL deals, or stats,” Tanuvasa said. “It was about where I felt spiritually aligned and personally supported. I needed an environment that matched my values — and BYU gave me that.”

Tanuvasa admitted that leaving Utah was difficult, especially given the intense rivalry between the two programs. However, he emphasized that faith and family were central to his decision. He also spoke about the warm reception he received from BYU coaches and players, many of whom had known him from his high school and missionary days.

“There’s no hate for Utah,” he added. “I respect my time there. But sometimes, you have to go where you feel you can grow the most — not just as a player, but as a person.”
