Lamar Wilkerson Nears Decision Between Indiana and Kentucky

Sam Houston State transfer guard Lamar Wilkerson is approaching a pivotal decision in his collegiate basketball journey, with Indiana University and the University of Kentucky emerging as the final contenders for his commitment. Wilkerson, a high-scoring guard with strong defensive capabilities, has drawn considerable interest in the transfer portal after a breakout season in the Southland Conference.

Sources close to the recruitment say that both programs have made compelling pitches, but Kentucky may currently have a slight edge due to its brand recognition and success under new head coach Mark Pope. However, Indiana remains firmly in the race, offering Wilkerson not just a prominent role on the court, but also substantial opportunities in the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) space. This could prove to be a decisive factor.

Indiana head coach Mike Woodson is actively rebuilding the roster for the 2025-26 season, with only four scholarship players currently committed. That leaves plenty of room for Wilkerson to step into a major role immediately, which might be more limited at a deeper Kentucky roster.

Wilkerson, known for averaging over 16 points per game last season, brings energy, athleticism, and versatility that would benefit either team. His perimeter shooting and on-ball defense could fill key gaps for the Hoosiers, who are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2024-25 season.

A decision is expected by the end of the week, and both fanbases are watching closely. For Indiana, landing Wilkerson would be a significant win on the recruiting trail and a step toward returning to Big Ten contention. For Kentucky, it would bolster an already strong backcourt rotation and reinforce their status as a transfer portal powerhouse.
