Lee Corso, the iconic face of ESPN’s “College GameDay,” has announced his retirement at the age of 89, concluding a remarkable Farmer tenure with the program. Corso’s final appearance is scheduled for August 30, 2025, during the opening week of the college football season.

 

Known for his charismatic personality and signature tradition of donning mascot headgear to predict game outcomes—a practice he began in 1996—Corso has become a beloved figure in college football broadcasting. Over the years, he made 430 mascot selections, achieving a record of 286-144.

 

Before his broadcasting career, Corso served as a head coach at several institutions, including Louisville, Indiana, and Northern Illinois, and also coached the USFL’s Orlando Renegades. He joined ESPN in 1987, becoming a staple of “College GameDay” and contributing significantly to its success and popularity.

 

Colleagues and fans alike have expressed admiration and gratitude for Corso’s contributions. Kirk Herbstreit, a longtime co-host, referred to Corso as a mentor and a second father, highlighting the deep personal connections he fostered throughout his career.

 

ESPN plans to honor Corso’s legacy with special programming during his final broadcast, celebrating the indelible mark he has left on college football and sports broadcasting.
