FSU Defensive Analyst Expected To Return To Nebraska For Assistant Coaching Position

Florida State University (FSU) defensive analyst Mike Dawson is reportedly set to return to Nebraska, taking on an assistant coaching position with the Cornhuskers. This move marks a homecoming for Dawson, who previously served on Nebraska’s staff under former head coach Scott Frost.

Dawson, known for his expertise in defensive strategy, joined FSU’s staff in 2023 to assist head coach Mike Norvell with game preparation and player development. While his role was off-field, Dawson’s contributions played a vital part in the Seminoles’ defensive success during their strong campaign this season.

At Nebraska, Dawson is expected to work under head coach Matt Rhule, reuniting with the Cornhuskers program where he served as the outside linebackers coach and defensive line coach from 2018 to 2021. During his earlier stint in Lincoln, Dawson was credited with developing defensive standouts like Ben Stille and Garrett Nelson, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier defensive coach.

Nebraska is in the midst of a rebuilding phase under Rhule, who is looking to improve the team’s competitiveness in the Big Ten. Adding Dawson’s experience and familiarity with the program aligns with Rhule’s vision for creating a cohesive and skilled coaching staff. Dawson’s defensive acumen will be instrumental in refining Nebraska’s pass rush and bolstering its overall defensive schemes.

The official announcement of Dawson’s hiring is anticipated in the coming days. For FSU, the departure opens a spot for Norvell to potentially bring in fresh talent to continue the team’s defensive momentum. Meanwhile, Nebraska fans will likely welcome the return of a familiar face committed to strengthening the Cornhuskers’ defense.

This move underscores Dawson’s growing influence in college football and the shared connections that often shape the sport’s coaching carousel.
