Tennessee Volunteers sophomore point guard Edie Darby has been named the 2025 National Player of the Year, cementing her status as one of the brightest stars in college basketball.

Darby’s recognition comes after a stellar season in which she led the Vols to a dominant campaign, showcasing not only her scoring ability but also her leadership and playmaking skills. Averaging 19.8 points, 7.2 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game, she proved to be the heartbeat of the Tennessee offense, guiding the team through a highly competitive SEC schedule.

Her impact extended beyond the stat sheet, as her clutch performances in key moments helped Tennessee secure a deep postseason run. Whether it was a game-winning shot or a crucial defensive stop, Darby consistently delivered under pressure, earning the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents alike.

“This award means everything to me, but it’s also a testament to my teammates, coaches, and the incredible support system at Tennessee,” Darby said. “I wouldn’t be here without them pushing me every day.”

Vols head coach Kellie Harper praised Darby’s work ethic and leadership, calling her “one of the most complete players” she has ever coached. “Edie embodies what it means to be a Tennessee Volunteer. She works relentlessly, competes at the highest level, and lifts everyone around her,” Harper said.

Darby becomes the first Tennessee player to win the prestigious award since Candace Parker in 2008, further solidifying the program’s rich history of producing elite talent. With two more years of eligibility remaining, the sky is the limit for the Vols’ young star as she continues to shape her legacy.
