Why Jordan Clarkson isn’t playing for Gilas Pilipinas?

Jordan Clarkson isn’t on the Gilas Pilipinas roster because the Philippines opted for continuity, relying on the squad that played in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 qualifiers, which did not include Clarkson.

Utah Jazz star Jordan Clarkson wasn’t included in the roster, which might have left many fans wondering why.

Back in February, ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone confirmed that the Philippines national team opted for continuity.

In the upcoming FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament, Cone chose to rely on the core from the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, which did not include Clarkson.

“This tournament [FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers] is preparation for the next one,” Cone was quoted by SBP. “We’re building chemistry, building our style of play, figuring out our philosophy, and trying to create a buy-in with the players.”

“That’s what this one is all about for us. Winning is important, but honestly less important than doing those things because that’s gonna bring us to the next one and make us grow,” he added.

The Philippines Basketball Federation seems to support Cone’s approach. Gilas Pilipinas Executive Director Erika Dy positively commented on Cone’s decision.

“Coach Tim has already explained how his program works. It’s really short camps right before the tournaments,” Dy told Rom Anzures from ABS-CBN News. “Premise of coach Tim, we have the same roster every time. The shorter training periods will accumulate, and the players will build chemistry.”

“The program is working. He [Cone] has secured the best talents that we have. In the past, it’s been hard for us. Because of these shorter training periods, it’s easier for players to commit, and because these are high-level players, it’s easier for them to learn Coach Tim’s system,” spin.ph quotes Dy.
